How do you beat the Recycling Core in Flipping is Hard?

The Recycling Core is the ninth of the ten areas the studio lists, after Blanket Fort Kingdom. The route below follows ALittleTooSaucy’s full-game speedrun tutorial from 33:00 to 41:15: a fast opening rail, three wall jumps in a row, pad shortcuts, a dip jump section and a final super pad that carries you to the server door. The stages after the door are covered at the end.

The narrator says “I really hope it doesn’t break you, Flippy. I really, really hope that.” From the same runner’s Hard mode solo run at 35:14.

What does the Recycling Core look like at a glance?

Recycling Core (Floor 9)
Official order Ninth of ten areas, after Blanket Fort Kingdom
Steam “reach” achievement Scrap Metal: Reach the Recycling Core
NPC challenges on Steam Greg, Groggy
Moves the tutorial uses Rails, wall jumps, bounce pads and super pads, dip jumps, momentum high jumps
Obstacles the tutorial mentions Hammer platforms, spinning platforms, a moving platform
The runner’s note “There’s literally so many skips on this level”

How does the route go, step by step?

1. How do you build speed on the opening rail?

The first rail gives you a lot of speed. As long as you are not on a curve, do a little flip, and on the last straightaway keep jumping to gain speed (33:00). The runner adds that the extra speed does not save much time by itself (33:30).

2. How do the three wall jumps work?

Instead of climbing the whole area, do a wall jump up onto a platform, another onto the next platform, and a third onto the one after (34:00). If you hit a ramp afterwards it carries you a long way ahead, but the runner has only managed it once and expects it to be optimized later (34:00).

3. How do you cross the pads?

Long jump across to skip a small section, then high jump up into a hole instead of going up and around (34:30). On the next ones he always tries to land on the far side if he can (34:30).

The first good shortcut comes next. Instead of taking the pads all the way up and around, take a single pad, watch out for the roof of the circular part, and aim toward the back of the pad (35:01). Further on you can skip a pad, go straight for the little one, then the last one (35:34).

4. Should you use dip jumps or the spinning platforms?

This is where the game introduces the dip jump (35:34). The normal route goes up the spinning platforms. The runner’s alternative uses the wall: jump to it, slide down a little so you do not miss it, then continue the wall jumps and finish with a momentum jump to the top (36:04). He prefers dip jumps because they feel controlled and he does not mess them up much (37:07). The controls and jump guide covers the basics behind these jumps.

5. How do you get past the hammers and platforms?

There is a way to make the hammers hit you upward if you time it just right, but the runner has not practiced it enough to try, so he recommends the normal route (36:36). A long jump across lets you skip going through the hammers (37:37). On the platforms, skip one each time with a momentum high jump and climb up; he warns that those platforms can wreck people (37:37). Further up, he says you do not need to panic about the next set of platforms: you can just high jump over them, and overthinking them is what gets you (38:41).

6. What about the pad skips and the moving platform?

Go from one pad straight to the next. When you bounce on that pad, use your jump as soon as you hit it to fly up and around onto the following pad (38:09). Later, wall jump onto the moving platform to skip a small section, or wait and take it across normally when it comes over (39:11).

The narrator keeps commenting as you climb.

7. How do you handle the narrator sequence and reach the server door?

When the music starts, the runner says not to let it freak you out: you actually have a lot of time (39:42). After you fall in, there is a gap overhead that you can jump into if you get a good angle. He presets his angle so that from a solo pad he can jump straight up onto it (40:14). From there you skip a whole section and jump across the pads; there is a cosmetic to grab nearby if you did not know about it (40:14; see the phone skins guide).

Then you wait for a platform to come down. While the narrator talks you can jump up into a section before the wall even breaks (40:44). If you miss that jump, the normal route only costs a couple of seconds. From there take one pad, link it to the next, do another super pad and jump all the way to the server door (41:15).

What comes after the Recycling Core?

The server room. The tutorial’s next stage has a normal route and a speedrun route. The speedrun route does not give you access to the time extenders, so you have about a minute and two seconds to get out (41:46). The runner says the route is not terribly difficult; you just have little room for mistakes. It goes like this:

  • Use the pipes: a couple of high jumps, then a double wall jump up onto a small platform, then climb the rectangular pipes onto a thicker pipe (42:18).
  • Jump across the thick pipe, climb the steps and do a momentum jump up (42:49).
  • The hardest part is a long jump from a pipe to a mesh platform. The other option is to use the wall (42:49 to 43:21).
  • Keep climbing, grab the virus and attach it. You can still move during the short cutscene, so position yourself for what comes next (43:51).

In his Hard mode solo run on a later build, the runner says that if you fall in the server room, you respawn in the server room instead of dropping all the way down (40:40).

The end. The tutorial calls the last stretch the end. Gravity is low and you follow a conveyor belt to the first pad. On all of these pads, use your jump as soon as you hit the pad. Aim for a pad at the entrance of the cave, which skips the pad right in front of you (44:21). A high jump or wall jump then puts you at the start of the cave, and that finishes the run (44:54). The runner hopes these skips get you into the top 100 so your name stays on the leaderboard at the end of the game (45:24).

How do the stage names line up with the area list?

The studio lists ten areas and does not name the last one. Steam has separate achievements for reaching the Server Room and the End, so treat both as stages that follow the Recycling Core.

Which Steam achievements relate to these stages?

Achievement Steam description Hidden
Scrap Metal Reach the Recycling Core No
Greg Would Be Proud Complete Greg’s challenge in the Recycling Core Yes
The Resistance Complete Groggy’s challenge in the Recycling Core Yes
Wrong Neighbourhood Reach the Server Room Yes
This is The End Reach the End Yes

Steam does not say where the Boss fight happens, so this page does not cover it. For the rest of the list, see the achievements and speedrun guide and the NPC locations guide. If you climb with friends, the multiplayer and Help Beam guide covers lobbies, and the Grid and Fridge guide covers the areas before Blanket Fort Kingdom.
